F.A.Q.’s

How much does it cost to make a record?

This is probably the most frequently asked question and one that doesn't have an easy answer. Since we charge by the hour, the amount of time you spend in the studio will determine the total cost. There are many variables in the recording process and each project is different. For example, a piano/vocal project will take considerably less time than a 4-piece rock band. The number of songs you are recording and several other factors will have an impact on how long you will need to be in the studio. Please call us. We'd love to hear about your project and give you a no-pressure estimate on how quickly we think it could be completed.

How long will it take to record an album?

Again, this is a question without an easy answer. The amount of time it will take to record your project depends on a great deal many factors. The number of performers on each track, the amount of overdubs needed, and the level of preparedness of your musicians, and several other factors will all have an impact on the amount of time that you will need. Give us a call. We'd be glad to sit down and chat about your plans and give you an estimate of what we think you'll need to budget for to get the job done.

Do your studio rates include an engineer?

Yes. When you book time in any of our studios, the rate includes the room, the equipment and an experienced engineer.

How experienced is your staff?

Our resident producer/engineer, Joseph Mills, has over fifteen years experience behind the console.  Including thirteen years as a professional, touring musician with 3 certified radio hits under his belt. He has recorded everything from roots rock, country, folk and classical to r&b, metal, spoken word, and gospel.  An experienced assistant is also available.

What role will the engineer play in the recording process?

Honestly, that's up to you. The primary job of our engineers is to capture the sounds that you create in the studio. However, the engineers at HighPoint have many, many years of experience knowing the best ways to capture certain moods, styles, and textures. Whether you're recording an industrial narration for a product demo or a full-length folk album, chances are your engineer can be a valuable resource for tips and tricks of the trade. If you know what you're looking for, tell us. If you're open to suggestions, feel free to ask.

What's the rate if I bring my own engineer?

HighPoint’s rate structure includes the services of one of our qualified, experienced engineers. While we have made exceptions to our policy on this, we don't have a set rate for this service. If you need more information along these lines, please email us at highpoint@cox.net, or give us a call at (785) 537-3383, and we'll work something out for you.

Will HighPoint recording provide musicians?

We can and will. Many of our clients bring their own musicians, but if you're looking for someone to add a bit of extra color to your recording, or needing to hire a whole four-piece band to back you up, give us a call. We know drummers, percussionists, saxophonists, trumpeters, pianists, oboists, vocalists, cellists, flautists, violinists, and many, many more.

Does the studio provide musical accompaniment /karaoke tracks?

We do not. However, we recommend that you try out Songs & Samples, a company that specializes in accompaniment tracks, and stocks a considerable assortment. You can find them at 5903 Johnson Drive in Mission, Kansas. You can reach them at (913) 831-2780 or (800) 228-2123.

Can you remove a lead vocal from a song so I can use it as an accompaniment /karaoke track?

The short answer is no. The slightly longer answer is not and maintain the sound quality of the original recording. (Some have likened the process to attempting to remove the eggs from an already baked cake.) The long answer is pretty technical, and involves issues like where the tracks in the original recording were panned, phase inversion, violations of copyright laws, and the like. If you're interested in the long explanation, feel free to contact us.

Can you create an accompaniment/karaoke track for me?

We can, but there are a lot of steps involved, and the process can get pretty costly. Give us a call and we'll give you the run-down.

What services do you provide for your clients beyond recording?

HighPoint does graphic design in-house.

We can arrange for replication/duplication services for your project.

We can create custom music for your project, or act as your producer. We also have contacts with producers of various styles.

We think you'll find that we're a full-service operation. If you need help with anything at all, contact us and we'll see what we can do.

Do you do graphic design?

HighPoint does offer graphic design services.

Can anyone record at HighPoint Recording?

Absolutely! We strive to provide the same high standard of service to every client whether they be a renowned industry veteran or a beginner recording their first demo. There are a few types of projects that we won't work on. You can check out our Policies page for more information on that.

I heard HighPoint no longer records rap projects. Is that true?

It is. We reserve the right to refuse to record anything we deem to be explicit, indecent or otherwise unbecoming of the standards of Highpoint Recording. While this doesn't apply solely to rap, it has been our experience that rap projects rarely meet HighPoint’s standards for decency. Please refer to our Policies page for more detailed information regarding HighPoint’s procedures and policies.

What styles of music are your specialties?

That's a tough question to answer. HighPoint has recorded projects that range from country to rock to gospel to folk to choral to classical to jazz to blues, and pretty nearly everything in between.  We've worked on projects at levels that range from "national-release" to "I’m-just-doing-this-for-my-friends-for-Christmas." We are passionate about pursuing excellence in every style that we record.

I'm interested in getting into the recording industry. Do you have internships?

Joseph Mills is currently an instructor for The Recording Connection, which utilizes a nationally recognized recording curriculum.  Please contact us for more information.
